The Beautiful and the Damned: pious heroine versus femme fatale

  • The Garrison Chapel London, England, SW1W 8BG United Kingdom (map)

Catherine Hooper, soprano and pianist  Brendan Musk

Opera is full of heroines, tragic or otherwise. However, many of the characters who capture our interest the most are the anti-heroines: the fallen women, the vengeful mistresses, the furious mothers. This lecture recital examines the dichotomy of the virtuous heroine and the damned woman, and how composers use musical tools to characterise both. We consider which of these characters are most relatable to us in 2024?

Includes extracts from

Massenet: Manon

Mozart: Die Zauberflöte, Don Giovanni

Bizet: Carmen

Verdi: La Traviata

Puccini: La bohème
