Philip Sheffield is a British Opera Singer with over 30 years experience in the opera world. He began his professional career as a member of the vocal group "The Swingle Singers" before moving into the world of opera in his late 20s with debuts in Berlin and La Monnaie - Brussels

He has sung at many of the worlds iconic opera houses in roles as diverse as Pelléas in Paris under George Prêtre; Mozart roles in Paris, Switzerland and UK; Britten roles in Europe and Japan; Janacek in Buenos Aires, Opera Du Rhin, Brno; Candide at La Scala, Tokyo, Kobe, Paris and ENO.

He has also created roles in world premieres including Terry Bond in Playing Away for Opera North, Alonso in The Tempest by Tom Ades for the Royal Opera and Opera du Rhin, Edward IV in Batistelli's Richard III.

He has had a close artistic relationship with director Robert Carsen throughout his career which climaxed in him being cast as Zivny in Janacek's Osud at the Janacek Festival in Brno in 2021 which was recorded and broadcast on Operavision.

Since 2018 he has taken an active role mentoring young singers and acting as head of artistic planning for HGO (Hampstead Garden Opera). He is a regular adjudicator and panelist for graduation exams and competitions at the Royal College of Music.

In 2024 he was a soloist in the movie Maestro directed by Bradley Cooper and was invited to perform music from the film in New York with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the New York Philharmonic.

He is excited about working with the team at Opera Prelude and looks forward to building on their diverse and unique programming supporting young singers.
