Opera Prelude August News 2025

August brought us two wonderful summer recitals, each showcasing the incredible talent of our young artists.

The month opened with the final performance of Double Act, a sparkling programme of solos and duets performed by baritone Stephen Whitford and soprano Phoebe Smith, with Jack Redman at the piano. With every outing this recital seemed to grow in colour and richness, and we were delighted by the seamless mix of opera, operetta and song that these artists shared with us.

Later in the month, soprano Georgie Malcolm, bass-baritone Jacob Bettinelli and pianist George Ireland joined us in Henley’s beautiful Chantry House for Summer Soirée. A festive champagne reception at the interval made the evening all the more special, and the programme — from Gershwin’s Summertime to Bizet’s Toreador Song and Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Some Enchanted Evening — created an atmosphere of pure enchantment.

Our heartfelt thanks to all the musicians who made August truly unforgettable.

Young Artist News

Beyond Opera Prelude, our Young Artists have been busy shining on other stages this summer.

Soprano Phoebe Smith appeared as the title character in Princess Ida with the National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company at Buxton Opera House. The performances were warmly received, with Seen and Heard International describing her as “the star of the show… remarkable with her stage presence, purity of voice, and amazing breath control.” Huge congratulations, Phoebe!

Meanwhile, bass-baritone Jacob Bettinelli toured France with Regents Opera, singing the role of Colline in La bohème. His photos from the tour captured the joy of performing in such unique and beautiful locations — it looked like an unforgettable summer of music-making.

Baritone Ross Cumming took on the role of Figaro in Cumbria Opera’s production of Le nozze di Figaro. OperaWire praised his performance, saying he “embodied the spirit of Figaro splendidly here, displaying a great comedic character and singing with richness and splendid enunciation.” We wish we could have seen Ross in his element, and we’re so proud of the wonderful recognition he received!
