March News

Will delivered a brilliant lecture recital, Love and Hate: The Complex Relationships of Sopranos and Tenors on March 19th and 21st. His enthusiastic delivery and meticulous preparation shone through, and audiences were treated to arias from Tosca, L'elisir d'amore, and Don Giovanni.

Earlier in the month, on March 13th, Eyra joined us for a stunning private recital in Fawley, "Operatic Love: Mozart to Bizet." Accompanied by pianist Abhisri Chaudhuri, she delivered a mesmerizing performance featuring Strauss, Debussy, and Wolf, alongside opera arias from Lakmé, Die Zauberflöte, and Candide. The programme beautifully explored love in all its forms, and we can’t wait for the pair to present it again at a private home in Chelsea this May!

We were also delighted to be hosted by Burgh House for a series the last four recitals of our series featuring our talented young artists. Each recital centered on singers who inspire them, and we were blown away by performances from tenor Matthew Curtis, countertenor Tom Lilburn, mezzo-soprano Ellen Pearson, and soprano Eyra Norman. Burgh House’s intimate setting and fantastic acoustics provided the perfect stage, and we are so grateful for their support in giving our young artists such valuable opportunities. We hope to return soon!

Another major highlight of the month was welcoming Andrew Dickinson, tenor at Deutsche Oper Berlin, to the National Opera Studio for an insight day on launching a career in Europe. His expertise and generous advice were invaluable to our Young Artists, and we deeply appreciate his time. It is so important for those with industry experience to share their knowledge with the next generation—thank you, Andrew!

Success for Our Young Artists

Beyond our own events, March was a month of exciting achievements for our Young Artists:

Soprano Georgie Malcolm wrapped up a successful run as Maria Bertram in Jonathan Dove’s Mansfield Park with Guildhall Opera. Reflecting on the experience, Georgie shared, "This was such a lovely show to end my time on the opera course with—its ensemble nature meant we got to spend so much time together in our final term as a full year group." We’re so pleased that she had such a positive experience!

Tenor Matthew Curtis was announced as a semi-finalist for the Paris Opera Competition—a huge accomplishment!

Mezzo-soprano Ellen Pearson was selected as a semi-finalist for the Kathleen Ferrier Competition.

We are immensely proud of them both and wish them every success in their performances this April!

A huge thank you to everyone who has supported Opera Prelude this month—we can’t wait to see what April brings!
