In this lecture, Patrick Alexander Keefe explores the repertoire of the baritone that is neither simply lyric or dramatic. Often classified as the kavalier-baritone in the German repertoire, or 'baryton-noble' in the French, this voice of opera's lords and aristocrats was the starting point of many of the 20th century's great Verdi baritones. Patrick explores how French and Russian repertoire has been used as a steppingstone on the path to Verdi, including arias by composers such as Gounod and Tchaikovsky, and culminating in Roderique's Death sequence from Don Carlos.
