Da Ponte Lecture 2
Sincerity on Trial: The Tenor in Mozart's Da Ponte Operas
Can a tenor be noble and be laughed at in the same breath? Mozart's heroes usually get to choose one or the other — but Don Ottavio and Ferrando don't get that luxury. Dropped into comic operas with seria voices, they're forced to prove their sincerity while the plot keeps setting traps for them. This recital digs into that glorious mismatch: gorgeous, soaring music sung by men the drama refuses to fully trust. What happens when Mozart puts heartfelt love songs on trial.
