Performed in the atmospheric setting of St Pancras Clocktower, it felt like the perfect way to mark the season. With every outing this recital seemed to grow in colour and richness, and we were delighted by the seamless mix of opera, operetta and song that these artists shared with us. Later in the month, soprano Georgie Malcolm, bass-baritone Jacob Bettinelli and pianist George Ireland joined us in Henley’s beautiful Chantry House for Summer Soirée. A festive champagne reception at the interval made the evening all the more special, and the programme — from Gershwin’s Summertime to Bizet’s Toreador Song and Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Some Enchanted Evening — created an atmosphere of pure enchantment. Described as an “intergalactic adventure for the entire family”, we would have loved to see Annabel take on this exciting, fantastical family opera based on Offenbach’s “Journey to the Moon”. She also performed back on home turf last month, as the soloist for Elgar’s Sea Pictures with Petersfield Orchestra. Over in Switzerland, baritone Michael Temporal-Darrell, who recently gave two wonderful recitals for us on the theme of “operatic transitions” in London and Henley, made his debut at the Luzerner Theatre as Dr Blind in their production of Die Fledermaus. The first, a salon recital in Fawley entitled Love and Loss: A Journey from Schumann to Shostakovich, was delivered by baritone Hugo Herman-Wilson and pianist Lucy Colquhoun. This was a wonderfully intimate event which centred themes of wistfulness and sentimentality. Catherine is an absolute delight, and our Young Artists hugely appreciated the way she shared insight into the technical and interpretative side of a performance. She also shared great bits of expert advice on language and interpretation, and the singers felt very grounded after a morning spent with her! Dan and George explored the world of Verismo opera - from the sociopolitical situation at the time, to the musical language it was reacting against, and how this created a new musical style for the people. We heard extracts from the operas Cavalleria rusticana, Pagliacci, Andrea Chenier and more. The concert, which was sung and played wonderfully by all involved, explored music across a range of themes relating to the Garden of Eden, from "Creation" to "Transgression" to "Banishment". The show was labelled “seriously impressive” by The Spectator, and both Patrick and Brenton received plaudits for their performances. The festival is well known for helping musicians develop their skills in ensemble and chamber music settings. We’re proud of Bridget for excelling at the festival this year – it was great to see pictures of her performing. He explored music by Puccini, Verdi, Donizetti and others to determine possible methods for crafting an Italianate tenor, as well as how one may utilise Bel Canto works when transitioning to repertoire from the Romantic and Verismo periods. He did a fantastic job, being a brilliant speaker and singer.
