When famous stage and film actress, Beatrice Lillie, (later known as Lady Peel) bought a magnificent riverside house, at Henley-on-Thames, she often took friends such as Noel Coward, Ivor Novello, Laurence Olivier, John Gielgud and many other celebrated actors, playwrights and critics, as well as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor on cruises up and down the river in her electric canoe, Beazie. At the peak of her performing life in the 1920s and 30s Lillie was a stage and screen star on both sides of the Atlantic. She was a performer of prodigious talent whose name is synonymous with the golden era of Revue comedies and music-hall entertainment.

Thanks to the generosity of the present owners, Opera Prelude’s young artists have created a programme from New York and London and from Beatrice Lillie’s rich legacy.

This evening also has a decidedly aquatic theme. Featuring some much loved musical favourites, we celebrate rivers and seas everywhere and in particular the venerable and multifarious Thames with its sun-soaked rowing contests, its pleasant boating trips, its proud naval history, intrepid explorers and pirates!

Picnic in the beautiful riverside gardens and grounds, relax, and be immersed in a world of Noel Coward, Cole Porter, Gilbert & Sullivan and Gershwin.

A share of the evenings hoped for profits will be given to Thames Valley Adventure Playground, The Chiltern Centre and RAW Workshop.
